Case Study

Gulf Coast USA Dock Repair

Issue

Concrete damage due to embedded metal corrosion and mechanical abuse by barges and container ships.

Cause

Embedded metal corrosion due to location on major Gulf Coast river as well as repeated mechanical abuse from barges and ships that utilize the dock on a routine basis.

Constructibility

Due to limited access associated with the dock being over an active shipping waterway, working from a barge or floating work platform was not feasible. The repair required a suspended work platform be erected to access the outside of the dock.

Repair Methodology

With feedback from Béton’s construction team and suppliers, Béton:

  • Installed suspended work platform to safety access the repair area
  • Removed the damaged concrete using pneumatic chipping hammers
  • Cleaned up existing reinforcing steel and augmented the steel with new steel to meet design requirements
  • Installed specialty high-early concrete repair mortar to rebuild the dock and curb to design requirements
