Case Study

Molten Sulfur Pit Structural Liner

Issue

Concrete damage due to a chemical attack, embedded metal corrosion, harsh environment and molten sulfur service.

Cause

Water intrusion creates sulfurous acid that attacks the cementitious paste of concrete, causing a chemical attack and degradation of the structural elements of the below ground storage pit. Chemical attack and embedded metal corrosion affects the structural integrity of the structure.

Constructibility

With extensive past knowledge and experience of these types of structures, Béton was consulted for an investigation, engineering and design of a new “structural” liner to be installed. Rehabilitation of the adjoining trenches was performed in the prior year. With great success, the client moved forward on the full rehabilitation of their critical structure.

Repair Methodology

With feedback from Béton’s construction team and suppliers, Béton :

  • Installation of new reinforcing steel
  • Engineered formwork and bracing
  • Installed proprietary specialty concrete repair material with Integral corrosion inhibitor and highly sulfate resistant
